Accidents to children in the home often occur when
adults are distracted, or do not provide adequate supervision. They can happen very quickly and is more likely to occur when you are under stress or in a rush, or when there is a change to your usual routine.

Tips to avoid accidents in the home:
TIP 1: Check the locks on your windows.
TIP 2: Put latches on low cupboards, and put a guard in front of the fire.
TIP 3: Fit child safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs.
TIP 4: Move furniture such as beds, sofas and chairs away from windows to prevent children climbing up and falling out.
TIP 5: Small children can squeeze their bodies through a gap as small as 10cm/ 4 inches wide (smaller than the length of a teaspoon), but if they do, they may get their heads trapped.

Talk to your baby with a book
In Coventry under 5s can get free books to read thanks to a partnership between Coventry City Council and NHS Coventry called Bookstart. Sharing books with babies and young children is a
fun way to share talk and it's never too early to start.

The majority of brain development occurs in the first three years of a child's life. Reading to babies and young children, and giving them time to respond, will help develop vital communication skills, which will in turn help them to read.

Bookstart packs are available through health visitors, libraries, playgroups, nurseries and Sure Start Children's Centres. There are a range of different packs available:

Bookstart
for Babies for children between 0-12 months, which is available from health visitors and libraries.
Bookstart+ for toddlers from 18-30 months available from libraries and Sure Start Children's Centres.
My Bookstart Treasure Chest for pre-school children which are given out at early years settings such as playgroups and nurseries in the child(ren)'s pre school year.
