Diet for motherhood/breastfeeding
There is nothing quite like the joy of becoming a mother, holding your newborn baby for the first time, but as any mother will tell you, you’ll be more tired than you imagined and you’ll never get as much sleep as you need.

When life is so hectic and demanding this is the time when you need to ensure you have proper nutritious meals. Top 10 foods for this time are Apricots (beta-carotene), Basil (calming properties), Cheese (matchbox -sized piece daily will replace calcium lost during pregnancy), Grapefruit (vitamin A & C), Liver (vitamin A and B complex), Lean red meat, seafood & pumpkin seeds (Zinc), Sage (for getting hormones back on an even keel), Sesame seeds (regenerating), Watercress (antibiotic), Yoghurt (digestion).

From Baby to School
Feeding children can be a battlefield making parents’ life more difficult! Unfortunately as a parent you’re like the home guard ranged against the armies of food manufactures, soft drinks, sweets and snacks, the giant fast-food industry and vending machines dispensing rubbish instead of food.

Consequently, children’s taste buds develop an enormous preference for sweet, salty and fatty foods, a diet high in sugar, salt and fat means health problems in later life - (high blood pressure, strokes and diabetes to name a few). These are long term that can effect your child, so every parent should think before buying that next bag of crisps, can of cola, burger and chips, or a bottle of ‘health’ drink; they contain nothing more than a collection of chemicals, sugar, sweeteners, a touch of vitamin C and a tiny % of juice!

Consider the Facts...
* In the UK one in five (4 - 18 years olds) doesn’t eat any fruit at   all.
* Up to 50% of children in the UK don’t get enough vitamins A,   B12, Folic Acid, D & E.
* Many children in the UK go short of calcium, iron, zinc and   selenium.
* One in five children in the UK are now clinically obese.
* Type II diabetes, which normally occurs in middle age, is now   regularly seen in 6 and 7 year olds.

But that’s not all, Asthma, eczema, allergies, hyperactivity, behavioural problems, learning difficulties, eating disorders and M.E, are increasingly common health problems affecting children throughout the Western world. Read the label, you can feed your children a hundred times more healthily with home-cooked food than if you use processed food aimed specifically at children.

Why is it worth it?
We know that it only takes small changes in the way you shop, cook and feed your children to transform their health and wellbeing. They’ll have more energy, sleep better, their concentration and school grades will improve and they’ll be nicer people to have around the house! Getting them to eat their fruit and vegetables, I feel the best way of introducing children to fruits and vegetables are with soups, juices and smoothies. Try making your own ice lollies made from freshly squeezed or pureed fruit!
